Donald Trump's insatiable desire for retribution has rapidly evolved into a structured apparatus. Over the year since his election, the president's rage and impulses have taken on the form of government actions similar to reminiscent to historical repressive systems. Justice department personnel who do not cooperate are summarily removed and succeeded by loyalists. Political figures who confront him risk prosecution, court proceedings and penalties. Critics have been labeled under presidential memoranda as “anti-American”, “anti-Christian” and “opposing economic freedom”, and menaced with legal action as “security threats”.
Government Institutions Transformed
Each instance involving legal action of political opponents and protection for loyalists exhibits its own unique qualities. Yet, notwithstanding their individual character, they embody expressions of what has emerged as a systematic method. Those events are not random. Trump's removal of Department of Justice lawyers and FBI agents, alongside his installation of supporters in key roles, commenced swiftly, promptly took on a consistency, and has now been formed into a structure. The justice department and the law enforcement agency have been restructured into ideological organizations under the president's clear orders to execute his wishes. Wrongdoing has been made standard. It constitutes the system of punishment.
Leadership is more concerned with penalizing the leader's perceived opponents than they are with defending our country's safety.
Inside the Structure
The origin of this mechanism has been revealed in the legal complaint of multiple previous senior FBI officials filed in September in the US district court in Washington against agency head a senior appointee and attorney general Pam Bondi for wrongful dismissal in “a initiative of revenge against them for what administration figures considered to be a failure to exhibit sufficient devotion”. The document states that Brian Driscoll, the previous acting FBI director, details a discussion in which Patel “publicly confessed the impropriety of his conduct”.
The official had tried to defend law enforcement officers from being terminated, the filing states. Patel told him that “they” – understood by the official to be the presidential administration and federal prosecutors – had ordered him to dismiss anyone who they determined as having participated in a legal probe against him. The document continues: “He clarified that he had to dismiss the individuals his superiors told him to remove, because his capacity to keep his own job was contingent on the removal of the officials who handled investigations involving the President. The director explained that there was no option he or Driscoll could do to halt these or any other terminations, because ‘the agency attempted to place the chief in prison and he remembers.’” When the official informed the director he was disregarding the bureau's own regulations, the director allegedly said “he recognized that and he was aware the character of the immediate dismissals were likely illegal”.
Widespread Impact
Since his alleged acknowledgment to the official, the DoJ and the FBI have been weakened and redirected for the administration's revenge apparatus. Six of the FBI's senior executives were terminated or pushed out in the first days of the government. About thousands of legal professionals at the justice department have taken a “deferred resignation program”. A minimum of seven government attorneys, among them those in the southern district of New York, stepped down in dissent over what they regarded as partisan influence in dropping the corruption case against the local official, the mayor, in as a trade for his assistance with his Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrests of migrants. The public integrity section of the justice department, which oversees ethical violations, has been cut down to minimal staff. The rights protection unit has been severely reduced: 70% of its personnel has departed. 33% of executives at the department have quit. The section implementing conservation statutes has experienced the exit of a majority its supervisors.
Rewards and Punishments
Concerning the mayor's situation, the interim prosecutor for the NY office, she, resigned in objection against what she characterized as the “exchange”. Tom Homan, his “enforcement chief,” showed up as the agent with the mayor on a media outlet to declare: “If he doesn't come through, I'll reappear in New York City.”. Meanwhile, another figure, earlier the justice department figure and a former Trump attorney, who negotiated the agreement, was given an court role, a possible springboard to the judicial branch.
The president's immunity for crimes carried out while in government, awarded by the extraordinary judgment of the Republican majority on the judicial body, thus thwarting his criminal case over the January 6 insurrection and safeguarding his public standing for the presidential race, is the foundation stone on which he relies to protect his supporters. Under these circumstances, he has been freed to enable misconduct. The consequence of the judicial ruling saturates his presidency and the political party completely. The court matter has spread. In the words of Richard Nixon's legal adviser the figure commented about the Watergate
