Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Each time a prominent honors show nears, you'll find a demand for the addition of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
  • Only a few logic titles scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
