The Former President's Progressive Alarm Misses The Continent's True Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a misguided view of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" policies pose an grave threat to the continent's identity. However, this perspective rests on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The actual challenge confronting the EU is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Economic Gap Between Europe and the US

The data paint a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere 13.5% growth for the EU. During this period, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, about 50% of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Question

This widening disparity is driven by stronger productivity growth in the US, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity raises a vital issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe entering at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of key factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, a factor that limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hinder European business. A US startup can launch a product under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is split among 27 different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, one can find causes for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to propose serious reform. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of sweeping changes.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, these assets might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses considerable advantages: high-quality human capital, excellent schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements could unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing next-generation tech, it can still dramatically boost productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
